San Angelo, Texas - Travelogue Week 003

Dear Friends,

We left y'all in Albuquerque where we spent two nights.  This gave Pete a little time to catch up on work. After leaving there, we sped along (for us) to Tucumcari, New Mexico and then to Amarillo, Texas.  Here we met up with Janice and Frank at Aunt Glo's house.  We had a wonderful time visiting and eating a home-cooked meal.  We left about 9:00 pm to get a head start to San Angelo, Texas.  We stopped overnight at a Walmart.

The next day we realized that Pete lost his wallet!  We knew it was either at Kohl's department store or Aunt Glo's house.   Pete lost his money, driver's license, debit card and credit cards.  Fortunately Ellen still had a debit card so we could get cash for diesel (which was only $2.94 a gallon).  We called Janice who was with Glo.  They were a few miles behind us.  Glo called a friend who had a key to her house and the friend found Pete's wallet in the couch.  Praise the Lord!  We don't have our wallet, but neither does anyone else!

We proceeded on to San Angelo where we met with Ellen's Mom's relatives (the Pierce family).  We had a great time, spending two days eating and talking and eating and talking.  Many thanks to Jana for her hard work in hosting Nan's (her mom) 85th birthday.  We left Sunday, fatter and happy and are spending the night in Fredericksburg, Texas.  Tomorrow, we are off to San Antonio to the Alamo.

Arizona, New Mexico Interstate 10 - Travelogue Week 002

Dear Friends,

This has been a week of learning.  We left Emily and Melissa at Point Loma Nazarene University on Sunday and spent one day with one of Pete's clients in San Diego.  Then we stopped over in Temecula, then onto Yucaipa CA to visit second cousin Paul Horn and his lovely wife Elvis.

Paul and Elvis were gracious hosts.  We chatted awhile and then looked at every page of a beautiful USA Picturebook.  We saw hundreds of places that we hope to see.  Then, they took us out to eat at the a steak house and treated us to a fine meal.  To top the evening off we took at drive around Yucaipa and nearby Oak Glen.  Paul did a wonderful job of telling us the history of this beautiful area of California.

The next day we moved on toward Prescott where we had an appointment for the motorhome.  It seems that the chassis batteries were not holding a charge.   We stayed over in Solame AZ, at Desert Palms RV Resort.  It was 98 degrees at 8:30 pm.  The owner Harry was surprised to see us!  Hardly anyone goes there in the summer.  That night we had a moonlight swim, alone, in the pool.  The next day Harry gave us the VIP tour of the RV Park, golf course and air strip/housing units.  There are about twenty homes with hangers that flank the air strip.  People fly in, park in their "garage" and live in their houses.  Great for those who love to fly!

The next day we moved on to Prescott, one day earlier then they expected us.  They could not get us in on Thursday, so we spent the night, after being pelted by a hail storm and only 68 degrees at 3:00 pm.  On Friday they replaced the bad batteries and sent us on our way.  We got 45 miles out of town and the new batteries were not taking a charge.  We drove back to the RV shop and they found that the positive wire to the starter was loose. This kept the batteries from being properly charged and ruined the original batteries.  They tightened the nut and we drove off to Flagstaff.

From Flagstaff, we went to Gallup, New Mexico.  On Sunday, we went to Calvary Chapel (one hour late due to time change) and then we arrived in Albuquerque by 3:00 pm.

That was our week; some fun and some frustrating days.  But a new week awaits us.  Here are some photos:

First Week of travel! - Travelogue Week 001

[Editor's Note: Each week of RV travel we publish a travelogue. This is week 001 out of 352 as of 05-13-2013.]

Hello friends,

After months of preparation and weeks of around-the-clock work, we locked the doors to the house and headed off to San Diego. We and Melissa stopped over at the East Shore RV Park (recommended) at Bonelli Park next to Lake Puddingstone in San Dimas CA.

We spent a day with Melissa and then arrived at Campland on the Bay (Mission Bay). We spent five days with Melissa, Emily and her boyfriend, Chad. Emily and Chad were good hosts, driving us around in Emily's car. We got Melissa checked in the Point Loma Nazarene University where she begins as a freshman and Emily continues as a Junior.  PLNU is situated right on the ocean with beautiful views and sunsets.  We spent time with various staff and professors learning about the school.  We are delighted to have both girls at the same place.

We left Mission Bay on Sunday and camped high on a hill next to a business where Pete will work on Monday.  Then we are off for another week.

Homeless and loving it,

Pete and Ellen Mattson

This photo is our front window view at the campground. At night we watched the Sea World fireworks from our living room.
